A Service Dog Named “Blue” and Owner Gets Hired

During this tumultuous time in the USA, as the Presidential campaign ramps up and more and more people shake their head (either in wonderment or disgust), our thoughts — and hearts — turn to Canada.  Here’s one more reason our northern neighbor seems to get it “right.”

When you are the owner of a service dog, you have a reason to need one. Often, these reasons also keep you from performing other life duties with ease, such as finding and keeping a job. Not to mention, even though the law makes way for companies to hire people with disabilities, employers may be leary of hiring a person and a dog.

One employer in Canada, however,  has been quite popular on social media because of one gratefully vocal new hire who needs his dog by his side to perform his job. Global News reported that Lowes Home Improvement in Canada hired a man named Owen, who came as a package set with his service dog. Owen needs the assistance of his service dog, named Blue. This didn’t stop the company from hiring him to perform his duties on site with dog in tow.

Owen Lima acquired his service dog, Blue, after needing assistance following a brain injury. Because of his injury, Owen often has difficulty understanding people when they speak at a rapid pace. Blue, the service dog, provides the calming effect needed to prevent and get Owen through panic attacks.

Now, Blue and Owen wear the uniform vest provided by the company as they greet customers and answer questions. Blue also receives a great deal of exercise and is also working hard as the pair walk the aisles several hours each day.
