New Dog Product to help dogs with IVDD

Putting on the WiggleLess® brace

Putting on the WiggleLess® brace

One of the most distressing medical conditions faced by many dogs today, is the dreaded IVDD. The acronym stands for Intervertebral Disk Disease (IVDD). Symptoms can range from signs of mild pain to partial or complete paralysis.

IVDD is seen more often in certain breeds (e.g., Dachshunds, Bulldogs and Bassett Hounds) but can occur in any breed or mix of breeds and in dogs of any age or gender. This severe disorder can lead to permanent nerve damage, making early intervention extremely important.

We were recently contacted by a woman who developed a possible remedy to ease this terrible situation and we are pleased to post the information here.

HOWEVER, as in other products highlighted by MyMagicDog.com, please note this is not a recommendation; rather, we are always on the lookout for the new, unique or all-but-forgotten product, which might be beneficial to our beloved canine pets. As in all products designated to help maintain the health of your dog, the responsible owner should discuss the use of this or any other pet-health accessory with their veterinarian. Also, please read final “A Words of Caution” at the end of this post.

The following was contributed by guest blogger and developer of WiggleLess®, Lisa Luckenbach:

Whether you have an overweight dog that needs extra support, an elderly dog with an aching back, a dog diagnosed with IVDD related back problems, or an overly active dog who would benefit from back support, WiggleLess® vet-recommended and patented dog back brace is designed to curtail twisting, relieve stress, and provide comfortable, firm, back support for dogs.

My dogs wear their WiggleLess braces a part of each day when they are active outside and when we go for a walk. It is multi-purpose and can also be used as an alternative to cones and for a barrier to skin irritations, etc., so we focus on using lightweight, breathable materials.

We now ship WiggleLess® dog back braces all over the world offering many sizes to accommodate different breeds and builds of dogs. We are deeply rewarded whenever we have the chance to help support a dog in need!

This was a great article last Mother’s Day, which will give you even more info: http://wiggleless.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Bracing-For-A-Life-Of-Helping-Animals.pdf

Red Dog

“Red Dog” wears her WiggleLess Dog Back Brace as a more comfortable alternative to an awkward dog cone. She has hot spots on her hind end and the brace prevents her from irritating them so they can heal faster!

We asked Lisa how and why she developed this product and we thought her answer was touching and meaningful, especially to those whose dogs may have IVDD:

“I love dogs. I’ve had dogs all my life. I may even have been a dog once, who knows? Unconditional love is quiet power and I have deep appreciation for the power and presence of dogs.

“When both my dachshunds were diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) I was desperate to offer them more than just weeks of crate rest and strong medication. I was highly motivated to create a dog back brace designed to curtail twisting, relieve stress, and provide comfortable firm back support.

“Both had several episodes (June was most severe) so we had been through the usual protocol: comfortable confinement for six weeks, heavy medication, lots of rest. We are talking a good year or so with a couple of back episodes, their recovery, research into dog back braces, and then deciding to make the brace I had a vision for in my head. I had to find a seamstress, have a pattern drawn up, do several rounds of fittings and tweaks and a few different prototypes and patterns were made using different materials- testing on dogs and in washing machines and dryers, etc. before we developed the brace we have today… which we have been constantly fine-tuning!

“Henry and June wore their braces while healing and recovering- and afterwards for prevention but since they never went to the vet again for back problems–we knew we were onto something!  I was excited when my own vet encouraged me to make these available to more dogs.

WiggleLess was designed by me with the support and encouragement of Dr. Robert Fryer at Oakview Animal Clinic in Oakview, California. We have many vet recommendations from customers who bring WiggleLess to their attention.

Missy

“Missy” had heart surgery and will need spinal surgery. Her mom wants 12 months in between surgeries. She is wearing her WiggleLess Dog Back Brace and getting GREAT results!

From the My Magic Dog Team: A Word of Caution
While we are always happy to consider, and post, products that have been designed to help our dogs, we urge you, again, to realize that many of these products are not FDC approved.  However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t good.  The problem is that many fine companies do not have the financial resources to provide verifiable research.  Indeed, testing the safety and efficacy of most products (be they for any animal, including the human-kind) is terrifically expensive, costing between $50,000 to $100,000 or more.  Indeed, our own veterinarian consultant, believes that the best response to IVDD is simple “crate rest.” But, as the monitor of the IVDD newsletter said, “. . . if you want to use one, be sure to be working with a specialist in IVDD to ensure the proper fit and only use when the correct time in the healing process”

Thank you Lisa Luckenbach for contributing this valuable post.
