The statistic that surprises me the most is the percentage of households that have dogs. Only 39%. It seems almost everyone I know has a dog. But we live in a rural community, too. Very interesting, Patricia.

Mary, you are right to be “surprised.” In fact, the Humane Society of the US claims the percentage is closer to 47%; but I listed the more conservative estimate from the American Veterinary Medical Association. Probably, the real percentage is somewhere between both numbers. Also, this figure does not take into account the many households which have more than one dog. Thanks for your response!

    100. Percentage of dog owners who should clean up after their dogs on walks. Actual percentage is unfortunately less than 100.

I love the “clean up: comment. When I’m walking my dog along the road, I find myself proudly holding my poopie bag in view so passing cars can see it! Hoping they will care enough to be respectful of the environment and fellow dog walkers coming up behind them.

Cliff — We at My Magic Dog just love you! That is our favorite, most hopeful statistic: that 100% of dog owners clean up after their dog.

Here’s a stat (not official, just my observation).

22: Number of hours dogs sleep during a 24 hour period.

Dear Kathleen: Wow — how could I have forgotten such an IMPORTANT statistic! Ha… ha, and thanks for your reply. I’m sure all our readers are getting a laugh out of that one.

Very entertaining factoids, Dr. B. Any idea how many households have both dogs and
    cats? >^;^<
