This is not an article about fashions for dogs (ha…ha… fooled ya’, although Halloween is coming and we at mymagicdog should really say something about dressing your dog in silly costumes, but we’ll refrain ourselves). This is about what breeds of dogs are in fashion right now.
Of course, our all time, absolute favorite “breed-most-in-fashion” will always be the mutt from your local shelter. Indeed, even in Dr. B’s long life, shared with many, many dogs, the ones that meant the most to her family, the ones who were the easiest to live with and still bring memories of great joy, were those of some multiple-mixture that was indecipherable but in its canine form no less lovable.
Still, we recognize that many breeds were developed for a specific purpose. And we applaud those who recognize the value of genetic lines, ensuring the dog meets its full potential, especially when that relates to the working dog, be he or she a service dog, guide dog, police dog, military dog, or any of the thousands of other working dogs who help humans all over the globe.
Nevertheless, it’s always interesting to observe trends in popularity among breeds. For example, did you know what the most popular breed in America was in 1905 – the year the American Kennel Club first started keeping track of dog breeds in America?
It was the Boston Terrier.
The Boston Terrier held first or second place from 1905 through 1935, until it was displaced by the German Shepherd in 1925, following the popularity of Rin Tin Tin.
But the clever little American Cocker Spaniel took a bite out of the German Shepherd, holding top honors as the most popular dog from 1936 through 1952.
Then, the little Beagle stole our hearts as the number one dog until 1959 when Poodles became the most popular breed. Poodles, in fact, have reigned the longest in popularity, being “top dog” in 1960 and continuing as number one for the next twenty-two years. Then, in 1982, the American Cocker Spaniel once again pawed to the top through 1990. Since 1991, the Labrador Retriever has been the most popular and continues to hold that spot today.
Following, according to registrations by the American Kennel Club, are today’s most popular dogs, by breed:
Most Popular Dog Breeds in the U.S.:
1. Labrador Retriever
2. German Shepherd
3. Golden Retriever
6. Yorkshire Terrier
Do you have a favorite dog breed? Is this a favorite because of his or her “looks,” temperament, activity level (or lack thereof). We’d love to hear from you!
